Another step toward excellence
The Dyslexic Studies program at MTSU offers an interdisciplinary, 18-credit-hour
program leading to a certificate in Dyslexic Studies. Content is significantly
rooted in the research base that defines dyslexia, guides identification, and
informs the content and strategies for effective intervention.

The requirements
Prerequisites for admission:
A license or certification in a field that is integral to the education of P-12
students plus three years of successful work experience in a P-12 career field.
Courses: 18 credit hours (6 classes)
Core Requirements: 12 credit hours (4 classes)
DYST 6000 Introduction to Dyslexia
DYST 6010 Identifying Students with Dyslexia
DYST 6011* Interventions with Dyslexia
DYST 6012** Multisensory Teaching Strategies
Electives: 6 credit hours
Remaining courses are to be selected from the following list in consultation
with an academic advisor.
CDIS 6000 Speech, Language, and Literacy
DYST 6013*** Practicum in Multisensory Teaching
DYST 6020 Adolescents with Dyslexia and Other Literacy Difficulties
DYST 6040* Neurobiology of Reading and Dyslexia

* Students must complete DYST 6000 and DYST 6010 before taking DYST 6011.
** Students must complete DYST 6011 before taking DYST 6012.
*** Students must complete DYST 6012 before taking DYST 6013 (1 credit).
Time required for completion:
Plans of study can be adapted to fit the needs of students. For example, the
certificate can be completed in one year by enrolling in two courses per
semester, including summer, or in two years by enrolling in one course per
semester, including summer.
How do you apply?
Admission to the Graduate Certificate Program
If you wish to apply for admission to the Graduate Certificate program, you must
apply for admission to the MTSU College of Graduate Studies. You can apply

send to Dr. Diane J. Sawyer:
- Your letter of application telling how many years you have worked in
schools as a certified professional; what positions you have held; why you
are interested in studying dyslexia; and how you will use the knowledge and
skills in the professional assignment you have now.
- Official transcripts for your Bachelor’s Degree or an unofficial
transcript of graduate work completed.
- A letter of recommendation from your principal or supervisor.
Admission as a Non-Degree Seeking Student
If you wish to take individual courses as a non-degree seeking student you must
apply for admission to the MTSU College of Graduate Studies. You can apply

Non-degree-seeking students may change to degree-seeking status at a later date
and apply successfully completed course work to the certificate. Students
changing status must meet admission requirements for the College of Graduate
Studies and the Graduate Certificate in Dyslexic Studies.
Schedules for Working Professionals
Many courses are offered online, some are hybrid online courses (online with
three or four campus meetings), others are offered in late afternoons or
evenings, and some are offered on weekends.
Start in Fall, Spring, or Summer. Courses are offered throughout the year.
Graduate students may begin the certificate program during a regular semester
(Fall/Spring) or during Summer sessions.
