Study of Validity of the Revised Test of Awareness of Language Segments
August 2000
Phonological awareness is a strong predictor of both early and later reading achievement in children. Tests that identify children's level of phonological awareness abilities are useful in assessing potential for the successful acquisition of literacy. The revised Test of Awareness of Language Segments (TALS-R) was designed to be such a test. This study examined the concurrent and predictive validity of the revised Test of Awareness of Language Segments. Specifically, scores on the TALS-R were correlated with measures of reading and spelling that were administered at the same time as TALS-R and 5 months following the administration of the TALS-R. This study found that performance on TALS-R tasks is well correlated with achievement status in reading and spelling, and the performance on TALS-R is predictive of future achievement in reading.
