Meet the Staff
How is the Center Organized and Staffed?
The Center operates as a unit attached to the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences at Middle Tennessee State University. Direct oversight responsibility rests with the holder of the Murfree Chair of Excellence in Dyslexic Studies, an endowed Chair established by Katherine Davis Murfree in 1988.


Professional Staff

Dr. Diane J. Sawyer

Holder of the Chair of Excellence in Dyslexic Studies, she is an internationally recognized scholar in the field of reading. Her work in the cognitive/linguistic bases of reading acquisition and reading difficulties, and her commitment to assist parents, teachers, professionals and children experiencing learning difficulties associated with dyslexia, has led to the establishment of the Center for the Study and Treatment of Dyslexia.

Dr. Stuart Bernstein

Director of the Center for Dyslexia and Associate Professor of Psychology. Dr. Bernstein has a Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology and has published research on reading and spelling development. Research interests include the normal and abnormal development of reading and spelling in grade school children as well as the nature of fluent word recognition in adults. Teaching interests include the normal and abnormal development of reading and spelling, the relationship between language and literacy development, cognition, sensation & perception, statistics & research design.

Janet Camp, M.S.

Supervisor of Educational Services and Early Intervention Specialist at the Center, oversees long-term progress of students in school-based programs; addresses early identification and intervention (children ages 5-8); provides consultation and teacher training; and engages in research.

M. Tara Joyce, Ed.D.

Coordinator of Adolescent Services and Adult Resources, directs programs to advance adolescent/adult literacy among middle/secondary school students; provides professional consultation and training for school personnel and adult literacy programs; and video production coordinator.


Karen Jones, Ed.S.

Supervisor of Clinical Services, coordinates and oversees assessment services; provides consultation and training services to school personnel; provides training and supervision for students in the School Psychology graduate program at MTSU; engages in research.
