The Tennessee Center for the Study and Treatment of Dyslexia offers asynchronous, online courses through our online learning platform. See below for current course offerings.
CALLING ALL TENNESSEE EDUCATORS: ENROLL FOR FREE!
The Tennessee Center for the Study and Treatment of Dyslexia at Middle Tennessee State University is excited to announce that, with funding from the Tennessee Department of Education (TDOE), all currently employed Tennessee educators of K-5 students now have FREE access to two online courses: Dyslexia in K-2 and Dyslexia in the Upper Elementary Grades. The goal of these courses is to better equip educators of K-5 students to identify risk indicators and characteristics of dyslexia among students in kindergarten through fifth grade (i.e., K-5) and to serve these students through a structured literacy instructional approach. Learners work at their own pace to complete all course activities and assessments within the given timeframe (usually about three months).
If you are currently employed by a Tennessee public school, you must first obtain a TDOE passkey.
Only educators with a verified passkey may obtain free access to the courses.
Please note that you may be given immediate access to the course, or you may be placed on a waiting list. If you are placed on the waiting list, you will receive access to the course in approximately three months. You will receive an email alert once your course content has been unlocked.
Research Study: Examining the Effects of Online Professional Development on Educator Knowledge and Self-Efficacy
Researchers at the Center for Dyslexia are interested in understanding whether participation in these courses leads to changes in educator knowledge about reading, structured literacy instruction, and dyslexia. A secondary goal is to understand whether participation leads to higher perceived self-efficacy for identifying characteristics of dyslexia and meeting the instructional needs of students with characteristics of dyslexia and dyslexia.
After you enroll, a prompt will ask you to provide consent to researchers to analyze your course data. Please note that participating in the study does not require any additional action on your part, apart from selecting “I agree” when prompted. The Center will never share your data, and all data will be de-identified prior to analysis. Click here to view the online consent form.

Dyslexia in K-2: Fall 2026
Dyslexia in K-2: An Introduction to Understanding, Identifying, and Responding to Characteristics of Dyslexia in the Primary Grades is now available! This course was developed by the team at the Tennessee Center for the Study and Treatment of Dyslexia at Middle Tennessee State University. Our goal is to better equip pre-service and in-service general and special education teachers, reading specialists, interventionists, literacy coaches, and other education professionals to identify risk indicators and characteristics of dyslexia in primary grade students and to use structured literacy to intensify instruction for these learners.
Learners work at their own pace between September 1 and December 1, 2026 to complete the course.
Upon successful completion, learners will receive a certificate of completion for eight hours of professional development.
The cost of this course is $199.
Once a course has been purchased, you will receive an email with an access code. The access code is required for enrollment into the course. This course was developed by the Tennessee Center for the Study and Treatment of Dyslexia at Middle Tennessee State University. The goal of the course is to better equip pre-service and in-service general and special education teachers, reading specialists, interventionists, literacy coaches, and other education professionals to identify characteristics of dyslexia in upper elementary grade students (i.e., grades 3-5) and to use structured literacy to intensify instruction for these learners.
